The Cory Williams Trade
In case you hadn't already read or heard, The Packers traded Franchise Tagged DT, Cory Williams, to the Cleveland Browns for their 2nd round pick (#56) in this years deep... deep draft! Let's re-examine this trade, and see the brilliance that is Mssr. Theodore Thompson.
First off... damn straight Skippy... the Pack franchised Cory after not being able to come to an agreement on a contract beyond 2007. It was the right move... and the smart move. By all accounts DT's are hotter this year than a Jessica Alba movie *drool*. The Raiders gave little known 'Run-stuffer' Tom Kelly 50 Big Ones (millions) for 7 years with 18 Biggies guaranteed! Yeah... Tom 'who the eff?' Kelly! That's setting the bar at Olympic standards baby! Thomas had 27 tackles and 1 Sack last year! Bitch Please? Can you even imagine what Cory with his 35 tackles and 7 sacks could command? We're talking Mad money here peeps! Bill Gates neighborhood!
Okay... maybe not Bill Gates neighborhood... maybe Bill Gates gardner's neighborhood... but still... a damn nice 'hood regardless!
Now franchising Cory allowed the Packers the option of keeping him for another year at a mere 6 million, or... trading him. Keep in mind how rediculously we are blessed at DT. So trading him was the wise and prudent thing right?
Well... let's examine what double T got for Cory.
Coincidently, the Browns also got Shaun Rogers from the Lions for some dude (Leigh Bodden?) and their 3rd round pick (#88) and... the Jets got Kris Jenkins from the Panthers for the Jets 3rd (#69) and 5th (#133) round picks. Oh... originally the Lions were going to trade Rogers to the Bengals for their 3rd (#72) and 5th (#138) but it fell through for the Browns trade. I don't think I need to remind you Packer fans of the talents of Mssr. Rogers and Jenkins... their rep speaks for itself.
Sooooo... using the handy dandy draft pic evaluation chart (see below)
...we can see that the Packers got the value of 340 (look at the damn chart people... this isn't brain surgery) where as the Lions only got a 150 for the pick and Bodden??? Had they of stuck with the original trade to the Bengals... they would have gotten a mere 267 (3rd - 230 plus 5th 37). Now the Panthers got a value of 284.5 for Jenkins (3rd - 245 plus 5th - 39.5)
Dude... Thompson clearly got the best deal of the day!
Gawd I need to get a life!
