Favre expects to start Sunday,
but Rodgers sidelined
Although Brett Favre said he plans to play Sunday against the hapless Oakland Raiders at Lambeau Field, the veteran quarterback wasn't quite ready to put his bruised elbow, tingling throwing hand and tender shoulder to the test during practice on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the Green Bay Packers' QB situation became even more complicated when coach Mike McCarthy said backup Aaron Rodgers hurt his hamstring on Tuesday and could be out a week or two. Rodgers was 18-of-26 for 201 yards and a touchdown in last Thursday's 37-27 loss to Dallas. Favre was forced from that game in the second quarter due to a bruised right elbow and separated left (non-throwing) shoulder. The Packers had only two quarterbacks last week, but signed Craig Nall -- a former Favre backup who left the Packers as a free agent after the 2005 season -- over the weekend to provide depth. Nall is cramming to learn McCarthy's offense and took the majority of snaps in practice on Wednesday. [More]
Elbow room
Mike McCarthy wouldn't be afraid to put an end to Brett Favre's NFL quarterback-record consecutive starts streak, with three caveats: if Favre is in pain, if it's in the Green Bay Packers' best postseason interest, and if the Packers' playoff position is assured. At least, that's what the coach said Wednesday during a conference call with reporters who cover the Oakland Raiders, although Favre's ironman streak virtually is certain to reach 270 games (including playoffs) Sunday when the Raiders visit Lambeau Field. Despite impressive numbers
Rouse stuck in backup role
There are comfort, experience and tackling considerations to make, but in determining whether Green Bay Packers rookie safety Aaron Rouse deserves to be a starter, the numbers don't lie. Nick Collins and Atari Bigby: 21 starts, one interception, 10 passes defended. Rouse: Three starts, two interceptions, four passes defended. If his numbers were projected over 12 games, Rouse would lead the team in interceptions and passes defended. Even he is left wondering how much better he would be if he were allowed to continue as a starter. "If I can get two picks in threes games, what do you think?" Rouse said Thursday. [More]
Colledge deals with demotion
While it won't become official until Mike McCarthy and the Green Bay Packers offensive coaches have their regular Friday morning meeting, second-year left guard Daryn Colledge realizes he's out of a job — at least for now. Colledge was benched midway through the Packers' Nov. 29 loss at Dallas, and despite what he called "a great last two days of practice," the 2006 second-round draft pick figures, like everyone else, that Jason Spitz and Junius Coston will start at guard Sunday against the Oakland Raiders at Lambeau Field.
