McCarthy keeping it competitive
for starting positions
Despite a 10-2 record entering the final four games of the regular season, the Green Bay Packers have some potential job openings in their starting lineup and sub packages entering Sunday's game against Oakland -- and coach Mike McCarthy doesn't have a problem with such uncertainty. From Jason Spitz, Junius Coston and Daryn Colledge at guard, to Atari Bigby, Nick Collins and Aaron Rouse at safety, to Jarrett Bush, Frank Walker and Tramon Williams in the nickel defense, McCarthy said there will be "competitions" this week in practice. "I think it's a very healthy situation to have a competitive situation at every position," the Packers coach said after the team returned to practice Tuesday afternoon. "Now, we want the continuity, there's no doubt about that. But until we get the performance at the level that we want, then we'll keep it competitive." [More]
With Rodgers sitting, Nall takes reins
The injury bug spread from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers this week, leaving recently re-signed Craig Nall as the Green Bay Packers' No. 1 quarterback. That will all change when Favre returns to practice full-time today, but for one day Nall, the former backup to Favre, got to run the show, taking all the snaps with the offense. Considering he was signed Saturday and never played in coach Mike McCarthy's version of the West Coast offense, Nall was understandably pressed. "I come in here with expectations of being told, 'Hey, you need to come in here and help Brett hunt a little bit because the guys that he's hunting with aren't very good at it,' " Nall joked. "But I just have to do what I have to do. Really, there's no easy way out of it." [More]
