Packers Not Hung Up On History
All the losses in Dallas earlier in his career don't make for great memories for quarterback Brett Favre, but he's taken to developing a sense of humor about them. During the Packers' team meeting before practice on Sunday, Head Coach Mike McCarthy was informing his otherwise young squad that the media are likely to make a big deal out of the fact that Green Bay hasn't won in Dallas since 1989. It's a losing streak that covers eight meetings at Texas Stadium from 1991 through 1999, including playoff defeats in three straight years from 1993 to 1995. "He said, 'All you guys were in Little League the last time they played down there,'" Favre said. "I had to raise my hand ... 'Not all the guys.'" While Favre's perspective on the history in Dallas is understandably different than that of most of his teammates, both the veteran quarterback and the rest of the locker room are taking healthy approaches to the past as the Packers prepare for their NFC showdown with the Cowboys on Thursday night. Favre concerned about complacency
after subpar practice
Advancing age might not be entirely to blame for those gray streaks in Brett Favre's hair. Yes, the Packers are 10-1, far exceeding the wildest of expectations for this season. But Favre still can't shake his nagging concern that the Packers' young players are too loose and carefree considering what's at stake -- and might be headed for a fall. Especially after the Packers turned in a not-so-sharp practice Sunday, only four days away from their toughest matchup of the season at Dallas on Thursday night. "I never thought we'd be 10-1 and be as loose as we are," Favre said. "I worry each week that this complacency and stuff will creep up on us, and it may. I don't know." The Packers returned to practice Sunday and were missing some key players because of injuries, one possible explanation for what Favre deemed a subpar effort. But Favre also sensed a hint of a hangover from their 37-26 Thanksgiving Day victory at Detroit. "We had a lot of guys out today and that always poses problems," Favre said. "But I found that the practice today was not as sharp, probably because guys are (saying), 'We're 10-1."' [More]
Underwood re-signed to boost depth at safety
The Green Bay Packers returned to practice on Sunday with a familiar face back in place: Marviel Underwood. Needing depth at safety after injuries to Nick Collins and Aaron Rouse, the Packers re-signed Underwood after releasing him in August. Underwood worked out for several teams after the Packers released him, but none was willing to take a chance on the surgically repaired ligaments in his right knee. So when Underwood saw a number with a 920 area code pop up on his phone on Friday night, he was thrilled. "I see the number, 'I hope this is who I think it is,"' Underwood said. "And it was." Underwood said he didn't blame other teams for not giving him a chance, but never gave up hope that he would return to the NFL someday. [More]
