Playoff Picture Pretty Clear For Packers
The Green Bay Packers haven't officially clinched a playoff spot yet, but they're about as close as they can get. The playoff picture for the Packers heading into this Sunday's home game against Oakland is pretty clear - win, and they're in. Not only that, but a victory (or a loss by the Detroit Lions, who trail Green Bay by four games with four to play) would give the Packers their first NFC North division title since 2004. And as a division champ, that would guarantee the Packers at least one home postseason game, also for the first time since 2004. But the Packers aren't looking to simply win the division and get into the postseason. They want to give themselves the highest playoff seed they can, and they're in good position heading into the final four games of the regular season to earn a first-round bye. [More]
Extensions in line for leaders
Bob Harlan believes general manager Ted Thompson and coach Mike McCarthy give the Green Bay Packers their best one-two football punch since Ron Wolf and Mike Holmgren, so Harlan is hoping to have both signed to long-term contract extensions before turning over the reins of the franchise at the end of the season. Harlan, the Packers' chairman and CEO, said Tuesday he hopes to have a deal in place with Thompson "before the end of this month," and while he doesn't know Thompson's timeline for extending McCarthy, he expects a deal for the coach to be done soon as well. New president and CEO-elect Mark Murphy's first official day of work is Jan. 1, and he'll assume the club's top administrative post after the season ends. Harlan will stay on as chairman emeritus and consultant. Harlan said he broached the subject of Thompson's extension with Murphy before Murphy's introductory news conference Monday afternoon as they prepared for possible questions from reporters. [More]
Starting spots up for grabs
It might seem strange for a 10-2 team entering the final four games of the regular season, but the Green Bay Packers have some potential job openings in their starting lineup and sub packages entering Sunday's game against Oakland, and coach Mike McCarthy doesn't have a problem with such uncertainty. From Jason Spitz, Junius Coston and Daryn Colledge at guard, to Atari Bigby, Nick Collins and Aaron Rouse at safety, to Jarrett Bush, Frank Walker and Tramon Williams in the nickel defense, McCarthy said there will be "competitions" this week in practice.
