Collins back; Woodson, KGB questionable
The Green Bay Packers will head to Dallas this afternoon for Thursday's showdown between the NFC's top two teams hopeful but unsure that they'll have two vital players on defense: cornerback Charles Woodson and defensive end Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila. But they will have safety Nick Collins, who practiced for the third consecutive day Tuesday and will start, according to Packers coach Mike McCarthy. Collins hasn't played since suffering a left knee injury Nov. 4 at Kansas City. Woodson and Gbaja-Biamila, both of whom were injured during last week's Thanksgiving Day victory at Detroit, will be listed as questionable when the official injury report is released today, McCarthy said. "They have 50-plus hours until game time," McCarthy said Tuesday. "We're going to give them the full amount to get ready." [More]
D-Line Depth Showing Its Value
When training camp concluded in early September, the Packers raised a few eyebrows when they kept 11 defensive linemen on their 53-man roster. A bit of overkill, some thought, to have more than 20 percent of your roster consumed by one position group. But the decision was in keeping with a core philosophy of Head Coach Mike McCarthy and General Manager Ted Thompson, that the foundation of any team is up front, which on defense means the defensive line. And a corollary to that is this: With more-than-sufficient depth on the defensive line, the heart of your defense will never be entirely compromised by injuries. There will always be quality players, in the trenches, who can fill the gaps. That philosophy has paid dividends throughout this season for the 10-1 Packers and has become most valuable in the last couple of weeks. [More]
Favre heads into showdown at his best
In the early morning hours after his team's latest victory, Mike McCarthy found himself alone, in the silence of his office at Lambeau Field, just a coach and his clicker. While shoppers were bum-rushing for their 5 a.m. doorbuster bargains, the Green Bay Packers coach was spending the day after Thanksgiving watching quarterback Brett Favre make franchise history. And he didn't even realize it. Pass after pass after pass — a club-record 20 in a row, beginning late in the second quarter — ended up safely in the arms of Favre's intended receiver. Finally, with 13 minutes left in what would be a 37-26 victory over the Detroit Lions, Favre misfired on a throw to Greg Jennings. Pretty impressive, huh, Mike? "I really didn't think anything of it, to be honest with you," McCarthy said. "I guess it's what you expect." [More]
