McCarthy Gets His Wish
We put the 'Special'... in Special Teams
Before the season started Coach MickeyC stressed the following...
Defense!
Get off to a Good Start!
Defense!
Ball Control!
Defense!
Game Management!
Defense!
Good Kicking Game!
And Defense!
So just how pleased do you think Coach is now? Throw in some HUGE plays on Special Teams (I called for that yesterday... Here) and you have all the makings for a brand new form of Wisconsin McCarthyism! (We're gunna need a better name).
And just how Clutch is Mason Crosby? Let's see... Lombardi Avenue... Holmgren Way... ummm Crosby Corner???
Well Let's see what the other Sports Writers are saying...
Crosby's last-second field goal
Gives Packers victory over Eagles

Green Bay - All those young teammates sometimes make Brett Favre scratch his head, but at least one of them proved he can come through when it counts. Rookie Mason Crosby hit a 42-yard field goal with two seconds left to give the Green Bay Packers a 16-13 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday. Crosby's kick was the highlight of a win that featured strong special teams and defense by the Packers. Despite tying John Elway's record for career victories by a starting quarterback with 148, Favre and his young supporting cast struggled to score. "He'd better make 'em all, now," said Favre, referring to Crosby and the Packers' lack of offense. It was quite an NFL introduction for Crosby, a rookie from Colorado who beat out incumbent Dave Rayner in training camp. "I kind of got thrown into the fire in the first test," Crosby said. "But that's kind of how I like it. It's exciting." The Eagles' special teams were exciting, too, but not in a good way. J.R. Reed bobbled a punt with 59 seconds remaining and Green Bay's Jarrett Bush recovered to give Green Bay the ball at the Philadelphia 31. Reed stepped up to try to field the punt in heavy traffic. "I couldn't believe he went for it," Bush said. Reed had replaced returner Greg Lewis, whose muffed punt led to a Packers touchdown in the first quarter.

Crosby kicks away doubt
Game-winner a rare feat for rookie

Green Bay - On his very first attempt at a winning field goal in the National Football League, rookie Ryan Longwell missed from 28 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles. It wouldn't be until three years later that Longwell would feel the pounding joy of deciding a game with a kick through the uprights. Mason Crosby didn't have to wait that long. Almost 10 years to the day after Longwell slipped on the Veterans Stadium turf and pushed his field goal right with 11 seconds to go in a 10-9 loss, Crosby stood at the 32-yard line against those same Eagles and watched confidently as his kick floated through the uprights with 2 seconds to go. There will be no delay in the crowning of Crosby's first big kick. He took care of that winning thing right away, providing the deciding points in a difficult 16-13 victory over the Eagles Sunday at Lambeau Field. More >>
Packers win wild battle of pile divers
Scrum work paves way past Phily

Green Bay - Forget the trenches, sometimes the game is won in the pile. Offensive linemen can talk all day long about how tough it is to knock heads at the snap of the ball, but until you've jumped into a rolling ball of knives known as "the pile" you're still a football virgin. On Sunday, Tracy White and Jarrett Bush dived into the pile and lived to tell about it. "Anything goes, is the rule," Green Bay Packers special teams coach Mike Stock said. "That's part of it. Who wants it more?" More >>
