My Take on Thompson
Unexcusable
McCarthy takes Packers into 2007
With Bare Cupboard on Offense

Defense wins championships... yadda yadda yadda. Yeah but how many Touchdown passes has Brian Urlacher thrown and how many 80 yard screen passes has Ray Lewis caught? Point being... Defense wins championships... but you still need a viable offense to move the ball even if Trent Dilfer is your quarterback.
That's why I find it unexcusable that Ted Thompson didn't do more to help Coach McCarthy reload the Packer offense this past off season.
First off we're sitting on what... like 16 million under the cap (haven't seen the latest figures since Manuel/Ferguson got released). So what does Thompson do? He signs a Nickel back corner and makes a trade for a running back that hasn't played (health wise) in two years. Hey... I'm not even blaming him for the Randy Moss stuff... Moss made it clear where he wanted to play and as far as I'm concerned... he can take his goal post rubbing butt on up to New England and play 'Team' ball under Belichick. Who needs him. No... what I'm ranting about is that he let Ahman Green go (and let's face it... how much better would you feel having him back now) without a solid backup plan in Free Agency and the draft. I mean c'mon... Brandon Jackson... 2nd round pick out of Nebraska and a guy that didn't actually even start for the Huskers.
Unexcusable and...Unacceptable!
Further on this point... I'm certainly not an expert on the draft. I'm just a guy with a blog. But... all the NFL Draft experts had the Packers taking Marshawn Lynch with the 17th pick. So....... when all the running back free agent dominos began to fall (Lewis to the Browns... McGahee to the Ravens... Nobody in the bills backfield) it didn't take a Mel Kiper-esque brain to figure the Bills (picking 12th) were gunna need a running back. Welcome Justin Harrell. Thompson got caught with his pants down and he blinked.
Now I will give credit where credit is due. James Jones is a steal in the third round. And all the Kiper-esque experts thought Thompson 'reached' picking him so high. I seriously think this kid is the real deal. Nice job Ted. But the lack of a plan at halfback was unexcusable. As Jerry Glanville says... this is the NFL... which stand for 'Not For Long' and a good GM is only as good as his last season's production.
