Packer Roster Cuts
The Final Cut Down
It says more about who we kept... then who we cut
Packer Pundit / Patrick Stuckey
Furry creatures that make great friends... course you wouldn't want to get to close to one when he's shedding... or stand down wind from one when it's raining out.
The Packer's love wookies... we kept 14.
It would have been 15 if one of those wookies didn't have hands of stone... Cory!
So what's that say about us???
The word is REBUILDING!
That's right... the 'R' Word... We best learn to embrace it folks... yes we're just two years from being a 4th and Mike Sherman's balls from playing in the NFC Championship... to this... Romper Room and another loosing season.
Have I thrown in the towel?
Hardly!
You don't follow the Packers for 40+ years like I do to just say 'chuck it' to the season before it even starts... but I am a realist... I'm not a half full... half empty guy... I'm more of a ... 'damn I'm thirsty... think I'll drink that wet water in that glass'... kinda guy! I see things as black and white and what's black and white is telling me management has already started charting the top 10 draft pics from next year!

So anyway... here's the linkys to all the good Packer Roster cuts.

(Edit: Davenport rushed for even more yards heading for the training room during those 4 years)
Todd Korth over at Packer Report has his eye on free agency and a certain Lion reject...
Roster set … for now
By Todd Korth / Packer Report
The Green Bay Packers have reached decisions on players that they do not want on their team at this time, but look for general manager Ted Thompson to make more moves in the next few days to fill at least two vacancies on the 53-man roster. PackerReport.com’s Todd Korth explains Green Bay’s moves today, including comments from Thompson. Running back Najeh Davenport, defensive lineman Kenny Peterson and wide receiver Rod Gardner were among the 19 players that Green Bay released today in reaching the NFL-mandated limit of 53 players. The Packers also placed three players on injured reserve. The roster moves by Thompson actually left the Packers with 51 players, including 11 rookies, two short of the limit, but in need of depth along the offensive line and at wide receiver. MORE
And here's Todd's money Quote...
In the meantime, Thompson declined to comment on if he was interested in recently released Detroit wide receiver Charles Rogers, but the Packers are in need of play-makers on offense and they might want to take a flyer on the former No. 2 pick of the 2003 NFL draft.
Well... Rogers ended his 4 year stint with the Lions with 36 total catches for 440 yards and 4 TD's (one a year) as well as two broken collar bones and a suspension. Suspended huh... well can he take a crap in a girl's dorm room closet???
Here's more on Mister Rogers neighborlyness I jacked from a Fox Sports story...
First-year Lion's coach Rod Marinelli was unimpressed by Charles Rogers' work ethic and production during training camp, when he was slowed by a sore knee.
Sounds like another Davenport... no pun intended but... let's pass!

Davenport, Gardner among cuts
Plenty of rookies remain on roster
By Cliff Christl / journalsentinel.com / 9-2-06
Gone is wide receiver-kick returner Cory Rodgers, a fourth-round draft pick. Rodgers was a flop in camp, but came out of college a year early. That might have earned him more patience from some teams. Remember just two years ago when the Packers carried B.J. Sander all season as a second punter? Also cut were wide receiver Rod Gardner and running back Najeh Davenport. They both looked good in the cattle line, but didn't show much in practice or the exhibtion games. Rather than try to nurse cornerback Mike Hawkins back to health, the Packers placed him on injured reserve. Apparently, they've decided to quit waiting on his potential. MORE

Numbers Tell Interesting Story
On 2006 Roster
By Mike Spofford / Packers.com / Posted 09/02/2006
Finalizing an NFL roster, particularly with respect to the last few cuts, is a numbers game, and as the Packers reduced their roster to the NFL-maximum 53 on Saturday, some curious numbers emerged. Here are a few, and how General Manager Ted Thompson assessed them and the current roster during his news conference on Saturday:
51 -- As of Saturday evening, the Packers are two under the league limit, perhaps to give them the flexibility to sign players released by other teams that they feel could help right away.
4 -- This applies to two positions, the less-than-usual number of receivers on the roster and the more-than-usual number of tight ends.
14 -- That's the number of rookies and first-year players to make the roster, one sign of just how young the Packers will be this season. The first-year players (who have previously signed with other teams or played professionally elsewhere but never made an NFL roster) are Martin, Humphrey and punter Jon Ryan. The other 11 are rookies, including 10 draft picks.
2 -- This refers to the number of linebackers from the 2005 opening-day roster now on the 2006 roster, a reflection of the significant overhaul at the position. MORE
Well... here's to a great 2006 Packer season...
I think next year we should just velcro the players name on before we get all commital on them and sew them on... just a thought!
