GIVE TED THOMPSON A BREAK

Saturday, 22 April 2006Green Bay Packers General Manager Ted Thompson has been criticized by Packer fans everywhere, as well as quarterback Brett Favre, for not signing top-notch free agents to improve the team and try for a Super Bowl run. Thompson, however, realizes that the Packers are not primed for a Super Bowl run just yet, so building for the future is the right option. And, when rebuilding a once-proud franchise like the Packers, the draft is the right place to start.
Most Green Bay Packers fans have been criticizing Thompson for the lack of free agent signings. I, however, agree with what Thompson's strategy. Last season, Thompson was stuck in the mess that was left by former General Manager and Head Coach Mike Sherman. As a result of that, Thompson had to release both starting offensive guards (Mike Wahle and Marco Rivera) because they didn't have the cap space to sign them. However, Wahle and Rivera were commanding a ton of money, especially for a guard. They also let safety Darren Sharper go because they were short on cap room. Thompson couldn't be (and wasn't) very active during free agency last season. Now that the Packers have a ton of cap space, because of Ted Thompson's cleaning up after Mike Sherman, everyone expects the Packers to spend a boatload of money on players that don't deserve it.
I also like Thompson because he is not signing guys who, after signing a big contract, will become lazy and fall on their face (Sherman's free-agency history is rife with such players: Joe Johnson, Cletidus Hunt, Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila, etc.).
