ARTICLE JACKED FROM PACKERS.COM FUTURE OF TEAM IS ON THE LINE By Pete Dougherty / 4-22-2006
The Green Bay Packers have only one need in this year’s NFL draft: A stud player. They earned a prime pick at No. 5 overall because they finished 4-12 last season, and they finished 4-12 because age and injury have left them without an elite player at any position. So it’s up to General Manager Ted Thompson to find a great player, a franchise player, and that No. 5 selection is the best shot he’ll get.
To say the future of the franchise is riding on his choice is an overstatement — former GM Ron Wolf blew the No. 5 selection in his first Packers draft by selecting Terrell Buckley in 1992, yet managed to build a team that won the Super Bowl four seasons later. However, the Packers’ road back to championship contention will be significantly shorter if he hits big on this pick, and immeasurably harder if he misses big.
The Packers, though, appear confident they’ll have a shot at a player they’ve graded as a top-echelon prospect. “There are going to be at least two really good players there,” coach Mike McCarthy said Friday. (Read More Here) |
