Drafting a Quarterback
THE PACKER PUNDIT OPINION
It just occurred to me the other day that, there is a mighty green and gold good chance that, no less than Five former Packer draft picks could be starting at Quarterback for Five different teams this year. And guess what... as we all know Brett Favre isn't one of them.
Of course those Five QB's are...
Mark Brunell / Redskins -- Aaron Brooks / Raiders
Matt Hasselbeck / Seahawks
Craig Nall / Bills -- Aaron Rodgers / Packers
Aaron Rodgers was the Packers #1 (24th over all) pick last year. It is noteworthy that the other 4 QB's came much later in the draft. Brooks in the 4th round, Brunell and Nall in the 5th round and Hasselbeck in the 6th round.
Ron Wolf (the draft guru) is responsible for choosing Brooks, Brunell and Hasselbeck. He had a policy of drafting a QB in 7 of his 9 drafts. (Remember Ty Detmer in 1992, Jay Barker in 1995, Kyle Wachholtz in 1996 and Ronnie McAda in 1997). Wolf proved you can find a QB gem in the later rounds as this article from Packers.com would buttress...
There's No Mold for a Successful Quarterback Deep within NFL draft rooms, three names are probably getting as much mention as Matt Leinart, Vince Young and Jay Cutler. Those names would be Ryan Leaf, Heath Shuler and Akili Smith. ÂTom Brady ran just ... a 5.2 40 at the combine, and just kind of spit the ball around a little bit, Sean Patton, New Orleans coach said, looking for. All of a sudden, heÂs what weÂre looking for. |
This year, there are three top notch QB's expected to go in the first round. Matt Leinart, Vince Young and Jay Cutler. (See Evaluation of the top QB's in this years' draft here).
It's worthy to note that the 4th highest rated Quarterback this year is Charlie Whitehurst out of Clemson. The son of former Packer QB David Whitehurst, who the Packers drafted in the 8th round in 1977.
