Packers Fans Rush to Buy
Special Sports Illustrated Favre Issue
The Harry W. Schwartz Bookstore on Oakland Avenue is one of the few stores that started selling -- and still have remaining copies -- of the Sports Illustrated Special Collector's Edition commemorating retired Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Several Barnes & Noble bookstores in the area sold out on their first day of sales.
"I got six," said Favre fan Denise Borchardt, who, along with three friends, bought more than 20 issues, collectively. "One for my dad and each for my daughters and some friends at work. We love Brett. He's given us a lot of joy over the years."
Those years are shown one by one over 80 pages, highlighting the best moments and record-breaking career of the 2007 SI Sportsman of the Year.
"There's nothing more special than Brett Favre," said fan Dean Skwierawski. "Nobody'll beat Favre, I don't think. That's once in a lifetime."
Even so, fans are looking forward to a new era under number 12, Aaron Rodgers.
"He's got a young team to work with, a good young team he's been left with, so yeah, he'll do well," said fan Laura Rathmann. Still, she added, "We love you, Brett."
Sports Illustrated says its print run of 850,000 copies will be sold for $7.99 at Barnes & Noble, Borders, Wal-Mart, Walgreens, ShopKo, Roundy's, and at Amazon.com.
