Grant providing flashbacks to Levens
After a second 100-yard performance in the last three weeks that has led to two wins, Ryan Grant has emphatically stated he is the Packers' starting running back for the foreseeable future. Brett Favre has seen this running back before, albeit 10 years earlier. Even the uniform number is identical -- 25. You see, Grant reminds Favre of Dorsey Levens, his backfield mate when the Packers went to back-to-back Super Bowls. "A lot, a lot," Favre said of Grant's resemblance to Levens. "The number (25), obviously, is striking, from that standpoint. He's a big, physical back. He's deceptively fast, kind of sneaks up on you. His role in the passing game can evolve to what Dorsey's role with us was. But he does remind me a lot of him." [More]
McCarthy Still Keeping
Team Grounded
Head Coach Mike McCarthy said it in his first talk with the team back in the spring of 2006. He said it again after he lost his first game as a head coach 26-0. And he continues to say it now, with his team leading the NFC North by two games. "The biggest challenge that we'll have here is handling success," is the familiar refrain. Since a 4-8 start to his head coaching career, McCarthy has won 12 of his last 13 games, and with an 8-1 record in 2007, his Packers are tied for the best record in the NFC with the Dallas Cowboys. Well-schooled in success
The new head coach strode purposefully into the vast meeting room, notes in hand and PowerPoint presentation loaded and waiting in the overhead projector. It was spring, 2006. He was about to speak to his whole team for the first time, and he knew the score. The club was coming off an abysmal 4-12 season that had gotten the last guy fired. [More]
Soaring into the lead
Packers pass Pats as top passing team
There doesn't appear to be anywhere higher the Green Bay Packers' passing offense can go, not after taking over the National Football League's No. 1 spot from the New England Patriots over the weekend. The Packers' impressive numbers are partly the result of the frequency with which they throw the ball - only New Orleans (371) has thrown it more times than Green Bay (356) - and partly the result of their proficiency in completing passes (tied for second in the NFL with a 67.4 completion percentage). Five-wide set a whole new animal
In the Animal Planet that is the Green Bay Packers' offense — they have personnel groupings called Zebra, Tiger, Leopard, Hippo and Falcon — the five-wide receiver set they unveiled in Sunday's 34-0 victory is the only one without a zoological name. "Big Five," coach Mike McCarthy calls it. And with seven games left in the season, it could become Big Time in the Packers' attack. [More]
