Jennings opens offense with deep routes
The Green Bay Packers are 7-1 and one of the major surprises of the NFL season in part because a handful of young players have grown into key playmaking roles. Perhaps foremost among them is second-year receiver Greg Jennings, who last week in wins over Denver and Kansas City combined for three touchdown receptions, including an 82-yarder that beat Denver in overtime and a 60-yarder late in the fourth quarter that provided the winning points against the Chiefs. Jennings is making the step from a second-round draft pick whose promising rookie season was derailed by an ankle injury to a second-year pro who's making plays big and small in a Packers passing game that is becoming more dynamic by the week. "We're excited about Greg Jennings, and I think you can see why just in the last couple weeks," coach Mike McCarthy said. "When he's healthy, he has the ability to move the chains with the underneath completions, but his yards after the catch, he's something special. Him and Donald (Driver) both are so consistent in that area. But he also has the deep speed to go deep. Good football player." [More]
Kampman sees world
beyond football
Green Bay's persistent left defensive end Aaron Kampman can hardly count his quarterback sacks much less all of his blessings, and yet it isn't enough. He needs more. Not just stuff. Another flat screen TV to watch the replay of him devouring Damon Huard or Jay Cutler just isn't going to cut it. Kampman needs more for his head and his soul. Which is why the 27-year-old from Kesley, Iowa, population all of 80, got on a plane and met wounded American soldiers in Germany. Or got on another plane to India where he will always remember a 5-year-old girl's warm smile for him, not because of what he did half a world away on Monday Night Football, but because he unwrapped her first piece of candy.
