Not your typical roster

GREEN BAY -- Down in the bowels of Lambeau Field -- in an area not part of the daily stadium tours the team conducts -- are the position meeting rooms. They are located just off the Green Bay Packers ' locker room and furnished with comfy theater-style seats, wipe-away boards and a video projector. Right now, the defensive line meeting room is standing room only. OK, not quite. But close. "It is kind of crowded," defensive tackle Corey Williams admitted Sunday after general manager Ted Thompson kept 11 defensive linemen on the 53-man roster. "Everybody's not going to be able to sit in the comfortable seats. The young guys, we make them pull up chairs and sit on the side, by the wall." More >>
Packers going with just Lee, Franks at tight end

A year after the Green Bay Packers opened the season with four tight ends on their roster, they appear set to go with only two — at least for a while. You won't hear any complaints from Donald Lee and Bubba Franks, the two tight ends currently on the roster. "We want all the reps, trust me," Franks said on Sunday. "That's not a burden. That just means we're both in the game at the same time. You've got to play the whole game regardless. That's not a problem. We're in pretty good shape. We can handle it." Handing the number of snaps might not be the problem. The bigger concern should be what would happen if the Packers lost one or both tight ends to an injury during a game. It's also risky considering how often coach Mike McCarthy prefers to employ a double tight-end or "tiger" formation. More >>

Final cuts leave Packers loaded along defensive line

Green Bay - Tackle Mark Tauscher was giving them a hard time Sunday during the first practice leading up to the season opener Sunday against Philadelphia. How many defensive linemen do we need? Tauscher griped good naturedly, as a parade of 300-plus pound giants marched across him on the line of scrimmage. Eleven, apparently. When Packers general manager Ted Thompson made his final cuts to settle on his 53-man roster Saturday afternoon, he couldn't decide how to pick apart a talented crop of run stuffers and pass rushers. So he just didn't. More >>
Running into trouble
Lack of experienced backs is troubling

Green Bay - It only took running back Ryan Grant a few hours Sunday to make one very obvious yet important observation about his new team: "This is definitely the youngest backfield I've ever been in," he said. That's one way to say it. Another would be that the Packers, especially after the team decided to end the season of third-down back Noah Herron by placing him on injured reserve, appear headed into the season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles woefully devoid of experience at the position. "It is what it is," said general manager Ted Thompson, the man responsible for crafting the Packers' roster. "You just have to keep going, and you try to pick the best guys for your team, where you are at that particular time. So that's kind of where we are. But at the end of the day, we feel pretty good about this group." More >>

GREEN BAY - How muddled is the Green Bay Packers' running back situation one week from the start of the regular season? Let Ted Thompson count the ways - or at least healthy possibilities. After getting more bad news about the health of one of his running backs - third-down back Noah Herron, who was placed on season-ending injured reserve Sunday following arthroscopic knee surgery - the Packers general manager was asked how many healthy running backs he thought he would have for next Sunday's regular-season opener against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lambeau Field. "We've had so many changes, I've got to think this through..." Thompson said. Then, he began counting, "One... two..." The truth is, at this point, the Packers simply don't know. More >>
