Draft Analysis Part One
Well all the draft cards are in and it's time for the Anal Exam to begin. Winners / Losers... Mock Drafts ripped to shrewds... and Mel Kiper, Jr. only has 365 more days till we do it again!
Odds & Ends: Don’t call him “Trader Ted”… The expected trade fest in yesterday’s first round never materialized however a lot of teams got very busy later in the day as almost half of all picks in the second and third rounds were traded at least. And no team was busier than the Packers with GM Ted Thompson calling the shots. After staying put and taking Hawk with the 5th pick overall, the Packers traded their second-round pick (#36) to New England for second (#52) and third-round (#75) choices. Then they sent the 37th pick, which they had acquired from Denver for disgruntled WR Javon Walker, and a fifth (#139) to Atlanta for second (#47), third (#93) and fifth (#148))round picks. Later, they dealt the 93rd pick to St. Louis for fourth (#109) and sixth (#183) round selections. As a result, the Packers came away from the first-day’s pickings with 5 players and will make 6 more picks today including two choices in each of the 4th and 5th rounds.
Let the debate rage… One of the great debates, at least in Big 10 land, last fall was whether Ohio State or Iowa had the best LBs. The Buckeyes, of course, had star OLBs A.J. Hawk and Bobby Carpenter, both of whom were first-round selections yesterday, while Iowa featured OLB Chad Greenway and rugged MLB Abdul Hodge. Ironically, the Buckeyes’ Hawk and the Hawkeyes’ Hodge are now teammates at Green Bay after both were selected by the Packers in the first and second rounds respectively.
Eye-Popping Stat... Western Michigan receiver Greg Jennings (who went 52nd overall to the Packers) had 11 catches for 244 yards and four touchdowns against Ball State — and Western Michigan lost, 60-57. We hereby predict that if he ever matches those numbers in Green Bay, the Packers will win the game.
Linebacker Extreme Makeover... Abdul Hodge, LB, Iowa. It's time for Extreme Makeover, Packers linebacking corps edition. The Packers grabbed A.J. Hawk, the best overall linebacker, in the first round, then tapped Hodge, the best natural inside linebacker, in this round. Hodge is a smart, quick defender who is great in pass coverage and reads plays well. He may start in the middle, with Hawk and former middle backer Nick Barnett on the weak side. C'mon, you didn't think you were really going to miss Paris Lenon, did you?
No Comment... Ingle Martin, QB, Furman: Martin threw the ball very well in shorts and a tee-shirt at the Combine. He didn't throw it as well in pads and a helmet at Furman: Martin doesn't have a great arm, and his numbers at a small program (20 touchdowns, 13 interceptions) aren't impressive. He was a seventh round value for a team that already has a young quarterback to develop named Aaron Rodgers; you don't want too many young arms clamoring for practice reps. Martin averaged 42.5 yards per punt, so maybe Mike McCarthy believes he's found the second coming of Danny White.
Bonus Question: What other Packer QB came from Furman?
Yep... David Whitehurst... father of Charlie Whitehurst picked by the Chargers in the 3rd round.
