Hawk with the No. 5 overall selection in the first round of the NFL draft on Saturday. Packers General Manager Ted Thompson called Hawk “the perfect fit” for his team. Thompson said he was praying Hawk would be available when the time came for the Packers to pick. Hawk (6-1, 248 pounds) led Ohio State in tackles in each of his three seasons as a starter. PACKERS TAKE LB HAWK WITH 5th PICK The Associated Press The Green Bay Packers upgraded their defense on Saturday, selecting Ohio State linebacker A.J. Hawk with the fifth pick in the first round of the NFL draft. Hawk, a two-time All-American, has led the Buckeyes in tackles the past three seasons. New linebackers coach Winston Moss has said he hoped the team would upgrade at the position in the offseason. The Packers had negotiated with free agent linebacker LaVar Arrington, who signed with the New York Giants last week. The Packers’ defense ranked 19th in the league in points allowed last season, giving up an average 21.5 points per game. The Houston Texans took defensive end Mario Williams with the No. 1 overall pick in the draft. Running back Reggie Bush went to New Orleans with the No. 2 pick, followed by quarterback Vince Young to the Tennesse Titans. The New York Jets took offensive lineman D’Brickashaw Ferguson at No. 4 — giving the Packers a shot at drafting quarterback Matt Leinart. The Packers drafted quarterback Aaron Rodgers in the first round of last year’s draft.
