LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. - The Green Bay Packers just might be getting a little fed up with waiting for quarterback Brett Favre to make up his mind. Whereas the company line for much of the offseason has been the team wasn't going to give Favre a timetable and Favre should take his time to make what McCarthy repeatedly called a "family decision," it's becoming evident the Packers feel enough is enough and Favre needs to decide.
It's been more than two weeks since McCarthy, speaking at the team's annual Fan Fest at Lambeau Field March 10, said he thought the team would get Favre's decision "soon. "I thought soon was soon," McCarthy said Sunday. "And (now) it needs to be real soon."
Asked if he thought Favre was close to making his decision, Thompson replied, "That would be a question for him. I couldn't tell you if we're close or not. He understands where we are."
But one way Favre could have helped the Packers would have been by announcing he was coming back in time for the start of the free-agent period. While the Packers entered free agency with $30 million in salary-cap room and thus didn't need the extra $7.6 million of space Favre's retirement would have provided, being able to tell prospective signees that Favre would be back would have been a good recruiting tool. "No doubt about it," McCarthy said. Thompson, who said he last spoke to Favre "a couple days ago," said he thought Favre's return would have been a selling point to free-agent visitors. "I think it's possible that there are players that might consider the Packers more attractive if Brett was our quarterback today," Thompson said. Asked if Favre's indecision has hamstrung the team during the offseason, Thompson replied, "I wouldn't want to get into that. But it makes certain things a little difficult."
