InDa Driver Seat (Opinion)
Jennings, Jones are good...
But No Backseat Drivers!
Packer Pundit Opinion
'Praise the Lord and Pass the Ammunition' has got to be Brett Favre's favorite song after Thursday's season sinking near miss, when Number 1 Favre target, Donald Driver went down after scrambling for an extra 3 yards. Let's face facts Pack fans... double D has not only been Brett's numero uno for the past three years... (262 receptions / 22 touches / and 3 consecutive 1,200 yard seasons) he's also been 4's ONLY reliable receiver on 3rd down and in the red zone.
His slant patterns are Freeman-esque and his down field 'break-away' ability is Sharpe-like on 'roids. He's got Barry Sanders hips and unfortunately... Foghorn Leghorn's Legs. (c'mon -- he's 6 foot tall and weighs a buck 80 soakin' wet... the dude's skinny!) So when Donald lay on the August Tundra... wreathing in pain and holding those very stick'ish-like legs of his... all Packerdom had to have the same thought... 'Please God... not a replay of the injury plagued 2005'!
So what would have life been like had Donald's injury been worse?
Well... we still have Jennings... but he's been doing a Chris Angel: Mind Freak imitation this year (the disappearing part -- Not the dating Cameron Diaz part... though maybe Brett could 'hook a brother up' seeing how they worked together on 'Something about Mary') and he did have a bit of a 'Hitting the Wall' moment last year after he got hurt.
Then there's rookie phenom James Jones. He does seem to have mad hops (witness the Rice-like jump ball he came down with along the sidelines versus Seattle) and he's become a legit 3rd down and red zone target... so far.
Both have their careers in front of them... but neither of them have 'proven talent' like Driver.
Yep... we dodged a bullet on Thursday...
'Praise God... Brett still has his ammunition'!
