Three Articles on the Packers Defense --
Packers defense getting the hang of it
By Adam Schein / FOXSports.com
The Packers defense was fantastic against the Jaguars. I was really impressed how Mike McCarthy's defenders flew around the field. Desmond Bishop nearly took Reggie Williams head off on one play. In talking to cornerback Al Harris the day after the game, the veteran said that a play like that really inspires the entire unit. Harris says the defense is on the same page and that a second year in the same system will go a long way. You could see how cohesive the Green Bay defense was. Harris also believes that he and Charles Woodson will form one of the best cornerback combinations in the NFL. Nick Barnett had a great game Thursday night, Atari Bigby has all but deposed Marquand Manuel at safety, and A.J. Hawk is about to become a star. On the other side, I am a Byron Leftwich believer, and I have written before that the passing-game struggles are a product of the receivers who will never live up to their draft status. However, the game Thursday night on FOX in Green Bay was very much anti-Leftwich. He was guilty of a lack of touch and simultaneously made too many erratic throws. This has to get better by Week 1 of the regular season. Story Link >>
Jolly tackles issues on and off the field

Green Bay - When camp began it appeared there wasn't a bigger long shot to become an opening day starter for the Green Bay Packers than defensive tackle Johnny Jolly. Overweight and unable to finish the fitness test all players are required to take before the start of camp, Jolly had to sit out four practices, along with fellow defensive tackle Ryan Pickett, in order to improve his conditioning. All along, however, the coaches knew there was a reason Jolly fell behind in his workouts and they weren't down on him about it. And almost as quickly as he passed his conditioning test, Jolly was zipping up the depth chart, so far that he might supplant veteran Corey Williams at the starting right tackle position. More >>
Manuel running out of time
to state his case at safety

Green Bay - If strong safety Marquand Manuel is worried about his future with the Green Bay Packers, he's not saying. Actually, by turning down another interview request Monday, he's not saying anything at all. Perhaps, then, Manuel's silence speaks loudly because as the Packers' final cut to the 53-man roster looms on Saturday, no veteran's roster spot appears more tenuous than that of Manuel. "Those decisions . . . I'm not going to be the person that makes those decisions," secondary coach Kurt Schottenheimer said. "I've heard some speculation in the media, possibly that (Manuel could be cut). But he's here right now. He's working hard every day, he's a great pro and I'm excited as heck to have him." Whether Schottenheimer will be saying that next week remains to be seen. More >>
