2007 Draft
Christmas for Draft Nerds
Break out your 40 yard dash times... your standing broad jumps... and your 300 lb reps... 'cause Holy Hair Care Products Batman... it's time for Mel Kiper and the NFL Draft nerds.
Now color me non-plussed but this years draft seems a bit of a bore.
Maybe it's because this is a boring draft year.
Maybe it's because we don't have the 5th over all pick.
Maybe it's because you'd have to poke Ted Thompson with a stick to be sure he's alive due to his and the Pack's inactivity this off-season.
Whatever the deal... I just can't get excited this year.
What to Do? What to Do? What to Do?
The Packers pick 16th this year... or basically... smack dab in the middle of the draft. Most of the Mock Drafts I've seen (including King Kiper's) have the Pack selecting Cal running back Marshawn Lynch. Lynch brings all the talents the Packers are seeking in a RB. Speed... elusiveness... ability to block and catch the ball. Generally speaking... a perfect fit for our zone blocking scheme. The only negative I've seen is some character issues...
basically of the Ahman Green kind.
The Running back the Packer's would love to draft is Adrian Peterson. The can't miss prospect out of Oklahoma. The problem there is that Peterson is expected to go early in the draft. Possibly as early as the 3rd pick (Cleveland). However, there have been some late stories this week, concerning an old injury Adrian got last year (Collarbone), that kept him out for most of the season. You may recall he came back to play in the Fiesta Bowl against Boise State... and it seems he re-injured said collarbone. There's a possibility Peterson has a Aaron Rodgers type drop... though I doubt he falls the whole way to the 16th pick.
So...
Do we trade up to get the "Can't Miss" Peterson?
Stay put and Draft the "Personal Relationship troubled" Lynch?
Screw the whole thing and pick the best available?
Go all "Thompson up in haaaare" and trade down to acquire more picks?
I'm kinda leanin' towards the trade... down.
Yeah we need a running back but... we already have a scat back (Morency) and quite frankly... I think there are about 5 or 6 solid backs that we could get in the 2nd or 3rd round. Wouldn't drafting... like 20th or 23rd with a bonus 2nd and 4th rounder make more sense. There's actually a good chance Lynch will still be sitting at 20... if not... this is a deep draft in receivers.
More than likely, if you're reading this post you already know 20 times more about this year's draft than I do. I'm sure we can all name at least 5 or 6 solid prospects from this year's drafting class... that will still be available later in the first round. Meachum... Jarret... Olsen to name a few.
The Moss Factor
That dude on the NFL Network (Adam Shefter) was making noise yesterday, about the Pack/Raiders Moss trade talks heating back up. I really think this is a smoke screen by Oakland. They want everyone to think they're trading Moss to make room for Calvin Johnson so that someone will panic and trade up to get him. I think Thompson is waiting the Raiders out. He knows they will more than likely just cut Moss and the Pack has plenty of money... as well as the interest... to get Moss on their own.
