New Look and Feel
Cha-Cha-Cha-Chaaanges
By Packer Pundit / Patrick Stuckey
As anyone of my generation can tell you, the gentleman on the right is British Rocker/Crooner and former Vice-Presidential candidate, Geraldine Ferrara look-a-like, David Bowie. Now why do you suppose I'd post a picture 'Iggy Pop' today? Well... it's because 'Changes' is the theme of today's Blog and 'Changes' was one of Bowie's biggest hits. (Though I'm more of a Major Tom guy myself).
For all of you who have been coming to this web site, I'm sure you've noticed the new look and feel. Saturday morning, I got up and did me some tinkering. I decided my blog was going no where. It had become a News/link site only and I wanted more. For those of you that come for the Pack News links... well they'll still be here but I will be divesting them in a different format. In the past, I simply cit and paste most if not all of the story and gave you a link. (Boring)
I decided, from now on I'm just going to give a paragraph or two, maybe just a good thought or quote, then comment on the story and let you make up your mind weither to follow the link and read it for yourself. Also, gone is the Morning Coffee Archives. I will be posting on this page only. I will link the columns (Opinion/News) on the left sidebar and hopefully this will be less confusing for first time visitors.
Now on to the News --
Underwood Out for Season
As feared, the Packers have lost safety Marviel Underwood for the season. Underwood went down on the Chargers first series of downs, during a screen pass. His legs (evidently) got caught in the turf and he tore some ligaments. He was starting opposite Nick Collins and having a great camp. There was even talk of his beating out Marquand Manuel who is still unable to play, or pass his physical. I never thought I'd say this but... I wish we still had Mark Roman back!

The Packers have lost safety Marviel Underwood for the season, his agent, Jack Bechta, confirmed on Sunday. The fourth-round draft pick in 2005 sustained a serious injury to his right knee in Saturday’s preseason opener at San Diego and tests showed that the second-year defensive back has multiple torn ligaments. Bechta said Underwood tore both his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. Bechta said a date for the surgery has not yet been set. Underwood, who was on crutches following Saturday’s 17-3 loss to the Chargers, will need reconstructive surgery and will be placed on the season-ending injured reserve list.
LEAKY O-LINE SUCKS
Yes, perusing the packer web sites one would conclude that would be today's theme. I found 3 articles from 3 different sources all saying about the same thing. They all had their analysis and excuses, but bottom line. They better get better!
If not, 4-12 will seem like a good season!

Green Bay Press Gazette
A year ago, the Buffalo Bills came to Lambeau Field for a scrimmage and tossed around the Green Bay Packers' offensive linemen like rag dolls. It was the beginning of a 2005 season filled with struggles in the trenches for an offensive line that never found anyone to replace starting guards Marco Rivera and Mike Wahle, who left in free agency that spring. This year's exhibition opener looked like more of the same. Though some scouts project the San Diego Chargers' defense, especially the front seven, to be one of the top units in the AFC, they nevertheless manhandled the Packers' latest attempt to put together a competent front five.
Journal Sentinel
Either it was one of the worst cases of growing pains an offensive line could experience or the Green Bay Packers are headed for a year in which neither quarterback nor running back will be safe from the kind of pounding that prematurely ends seasons. In the first quarter of the Packers' 17-3 exhibition loss Saturday night against San Diego, Brett Favre was hit five times on seven dropbacks, including two sacks and a knockdown on three consecutive plays. The future Hall of Famer didn't come back at age 36 so he could take punishment like that. Nor did running back Ahman Green, who was spared the brutality of the evening because he is being brought back slowly from a ruptured thigh tendon.

If their offensive line struggles as severely as it did in Saturday night's 17-3 preseason-opening loss to the San Diego Chargers, the Green Bay Packers - specifically quarterback Brett Favre and the running backs - are in for a loooooong year. The task now is to not let that panic grow after only one exhibition game, despite the alarming performance. For when the linemen watch their performance on film this morning before returning to practice this afternoon, they'll see little to feel good about, in run-blocking or pass protection.
QUOTES ON O-LINE
"You can't blame it on the system. We know what we're doing. It's just having confidence in that and trusting our instincts. A few of us were second-guessing what they were supposed to do and how they were supposed to do it, hesitating. You hesitate and you're going to get beat." (Scott Wells)
"I just don't think we let it go tonight. I think we were thinking things through. I know I was. I never felt a sense of comfort on the field. I think that's important as far as playing offensive line, having a real comfort level where you need to get to and how you're going to get there. I know I didn't feel that.We have a lot of work to do, I didn't expect it to be crisp and run smooth, but to have as many errors and breakdowns as we did is pretty disappointing." (Mark Tauscher)
"I think some of the young guys may be over-thinking and (need to) just relax and let the game come to them and let the player come to them. Everybody has their own gap and when they're bringing the blitz, there's going to be a guy in every gap. Just wait for a guy to come to your gap. Sometimes I think they're oversetting and chasing the guy and letting the guy come through." (Aaron Rodgers)
"We have a lot of young guys and rookies. I know you're anxious, and you're trying to do everything right and sometimes you overcomplicate the situation, and you don't follow your fundamentals and your rules. There's definitely stuff I can improve on. We're a better team than that. We have to correct those mistakes." (Darren Colledge)
