McCarthy prefers an inside job
The weather outside hasn't exactly been frightful this week, but unless he gets sunny skies, calm winds and unseasonably warm temperatures, Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy has no interest in holding practice outside to acclimate his players to playing in cold weather. To McCarthy, the quality of practice suffers when the wind and cold reduce the precision of the workout. So while the Packers finish the regular season with cold-weather games Sunday at Chicago and Dec. 30 at home against Detroit, McCarthy would rather do what he did Thursday: Practice inside the Don Hutson Center with the doors wide open, allowing the cold in while otherwise protecting the practice environment. Packers won't rush injured players
back for Bears game
Green Bay Packers defensive tackle Ryan Pickett was limited in practice on Wednesday because of a groin injury, and doesn't expect to find out if he'll be playing on Sunday until the last minute. "I want to play every snap, every game," Pickett said. "If it were just totally up to me, I wouldn't miss a game or a play. I definitely want to play." But with a first-round bye and at least one home playoff game already clinched, Packers coach Mike McCarthy won't rush Pickett back into the lineup for Sunday's game at Chicago. "Big picture-wise we're going to be smart with him," McCarthy said. "He's chomping at the bit to get back in there. We'll take the week to see where he is." [More]
Kuhn Ready As Lead FB
Korey Hall's hip injury elevates backup fullback John Kuhn into the lead role this week, but it's not as though the second-year pro has to dust off his helmet. Over the last several weeks, Kuhn had been getting more and more game snaps at fullback as a lead blocker, particularly on short-yardage plays, and sharing fullback responsibilities with Hall. So he's ready from both a physical and mental standpoint to be the main guy this week and probably next, depending on the progress of Hall's recovery. "I think it's a big help," Kuhn said. "It gives me confidence personally, and I think it gives the coaches confidence to toss me in there and let me do the things they would let Korey do before he got hurt." [More]
