Favre Versus Vikings

Vikings' D-Line Out To Disrupt Favre

When Brett Favre looks at videotape of the Minnesota Vikings defense, he sees a defensive line that is reminiscent of the ol' Purple People Eaters. "They're good, man, they're good," Favre said. "Their front four guys, first of all, are as good as any we'll play. That's no joke." And when one of those front four, massive run-stuffer Pat Williams, looks at film of Favre this season, it's as though the clock has turned back a bit, too. "He looks like he's in his eighth season right now," Williams said of the 17-year veteran quarterback. "He looks great out there. He looks like he hasn't lost a step. He's throwing the ball very hard right now and very crisp." It's a matchup that's all the more intriguing with Favre on the verge of breaking the NFL's touchdown pass record. Needing just one TD toss to top Dan Marino's all-time mark of 420, Favre is up against a defense so disruptive it has recorded 11 sacks and returned two interceptions and one fumble for touchdowns in the season's first three games. Favre seeks to make history in dome sweet dome

"I'd like to say as I got older, I got wiser and knew how to handle all those things. But in games that we've played well, we've run the ball effective enough to keep pressure off of the pass game." -- Brett Favre
Green Bay - The way Brett Favre mentioned it, the phone call he received Wednesday morning could have been from his wife to remind him to pick up the dry cleaning on his way home from work. Instead, the call was from National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell. "He just congratulated me on tying the record," Favre said with a shrug. "It was a very nice phone call. But nothing more than that." Just another day for the league's all-time winningest quarterback, who just happens to be one away from breaking Dan Marino's record of 420 career touchdown passes. Favre terrible in the Twin Cites? Not anymore
By Jason Wilde / madison.com GREEN BAY — There would be a terrific irony to Brett Favre breaking the NFL's all-time touchdown pass record against the Minnesota Vikings at the Metrodome if not for one small thing: The guy has owned the joint the last four years. "I'm trying to downplay that," the Green Bay Packers quarterback said Wednesday. "Would you work with me here?" No can do. While Favre's less-glowing assessment — "Better than I have been in previous years" — isn't wrong, there's no denying the numbers. In the Packers' last four games in the dome — during which the Packers have gone 3-1 — Favre has completed 100 of 149 passes (67.1 percent) for 1,221 yards, with 10 touchdowns, two interceptions and two sacks for an overall rating of 108.9. He has three straight 300-yard passing games there and his lone loss was in 2005, a 34-31 setback on a last-second field goal. Those numbers stand in stark contrast to Favre's first 11 visits, in which the Packers went 2-9 — including losing seven of Favre's first eight games there, marked by the unforgettable Terrell Buckley/Eric Guliford and T.J. Rubley games — and Favre tossed 12 touchdowns compared to 16 interceptions and was sacked 23 times for a 71.9 rating. So while Favre is cognizant of his recent successes at what was once his personal house of horrors, he hasn't forgotten those early, ugly performances. More >>
McCarthy's positive influence
helps to raise Favre's game
By Pete Dougherty / greenbaypressgazette.com From the outside looking in, it's hard not to conclude Brett Favre's rapport with coach Mike McCarthy has helped the Green Bay Packers' quarterback get off to a strong start this season. Favre has thrown six touchdowns to only two interceptions while directing an unusually pass-heavy offense, and he's led the Green Bay Packers to a 3-0 record for the first time since 2001 and only the third time in his career. Never was Favre's chemistry with McCarthy more obvious than on the Lambeau Field sideline late in the Packers' 31-24 win over San Diego last week, when the 37-year old quarterback gave the 43-year-old coach a hard but playful shove after the Packers scored the game-clinching touchdown with 59 seconds to play. It's hard to envision Favre doing that with any of his previous head coaches, and it's hard not to think McCarthy has had a healthy influence on Favre. More >>
