Driver, Kampman Selected To Pro Bowl
By Mike Spofford / Packers.com
Posted 12/19/2006
Two Green Bay Packers who have taken the long road to professional success got some well-deserved recognition on Tuesday. Defensive end Aaron Kampman and wide receiver Donald Driver, both late-round draft choices who didn't even attend the scouting combine coming out of college, were named to the NFC Pro Bowl team. Kampman will be making his first trip to the Pro Bowl, while Driver will be making his second, having also gone in 2002 as an alternate. The Pro Bowl will be played on Saturday, Feb. 10, in Honolulu, Hawaii. "I guess it says that hard work does pay off, so to speak," said Kampman, a fifth-year pro out of Iowa. "I've had a lot of help along the way. A lot of people have been there, a lot of great coaches, a lot of great players. It definitely hasn't been all on my own. You pick things from certain guys, you add them to what you do, and you try to get better." Kampman's steady improvement throughout his career has peaked in a sense this season, as he leads the NFC with 12 1/2 sacks, nearly double his previous career high of 6 1/2 set last year. He has posted three multiple-sack games this season, all at home, with three sacks against New Orleans on Sept. 17, two against Arizona on Oct. 29, and two this past Sunday against Detroit. A fifth-round draft choice back in 2002, Kampman began his career as a 285-pound power end playing mainly first and second downs. With the change in defensive scheme last season, he started showing more pass-rushing skills and he's lost roughly 20 pounds while becoming a steady, every-down player. Tagged early on with the label of "overachiever," Kampman has proven over time he's an elite athlete who's more than just a high-effort guy. "I don't get really riled up about that anymore," Kampman said of the label. "I used to early on my first couple years, but then learned to say, hey, whatever anyone wants to think is fine. I go out, play football, play it to the best of my ability, and kind of go from there." -- More
Vikings To Start Mobile Rookie QB
Minnesota Vikings head coach Brad Childress confirmed on Tuesday that rookie Tarvaris Jackson will start at quarterback Thursday night in place of veteran Brad Johnson. That's going to make it much harder for the Packers defense to duplicate the four sacks recorded against the Vikings in the Nov. 12 victory because Jackson is a much more mobile quarterback who can not only elude the rush but also make plays with his feet. "The change is that we're going to have to be more careful on our pass rushes," defensive tackle Corey Williams said. "We can't get out of our rush lanes because that type of quarterback they're starting, he can run around and stuff. He'll tuck the ball and run with it if you give him an opening, and that's something we have to eliminate." Jackson, a second-round draft choice out of Division I-AA Alabama State, has played in relief of Johnson in two of Minnesota's last three games. Last Sunday against the Jets, he completed 14 of 23 passes for 177 yards and added 20 rushing yards in three attempts.
Favre feels he's still got it
Brett Favre knows he doesn't move around as well as he used to, and he's far from satisfied with his 74.8 passer rating this season, but he still feels he has a lot of ability left in his 37-year-old body. "I feel good in the sense that I'm out there practicing every day, seeing the plays I make and the throws that I make," Favre said Tuesday at his news conference. "I know I can do it. "For me, I'm never going to rush for 100 yards in the game, but if I can make the first guy miss and make a play, then I know I still got it." Favre says he's more critical of himself now than earlier in his career, and he is frustrated with some of the offensive struggles this season, particularly last Sunday against Detroit, when he pointed a fair share of blame at himself. But he does think he can still play at a high level, so whether or not Thursday ends up being his last game at Lambeau Field will more likely hinge on whether he wants to play than whether he feels he still can. He also likes the progress he's seen in the 2006 Packers, though he stopped short of saying that would be a dominant factor in his decision-making process this off-season. "I'm in it to win, and I think this team has the potential to do that," he said. "It's been fun. I've had a lot of fun dealing with these guys this year. "I'm not content with 6-8, but in some ways it's been enjoyable and that makes it easier. But it ultimately comes down to what I want to do, what am I willing to do."
Tauscher ready this week
Offensive tackle Mark Tauscher practiced on Tuesday and said he's ready to play on Thursday night after missing the past five games. "The diagnosis from the beginning was eight to 12 weeks, and it was a situation where I wasn't going to be stupid about things," he said. "I needed to be patient." Tauscher, who injured his groin in the first meeting with Minnesota, returned to practice last week but was not back to full speed and said it was the right decision to hold off until this week's game. "There comes a point where you have to kind of look at if you're going to be effective, and I needed to get a couple days to kind of feel where I was at," he said. "I don't necessarily think I would have been as effective as I would have been coming in this week, so I'm hoping that the extra couple of days is going to help me play better."
Tribute planned
In honor of his final regular-season game at Lambeau Field as CEO of the Packers, Bob Harlan will be honored during the game's first commercial timeout. The Packers will play a video tribute to Harlan. He became the Packers' president in 1989 and oversaw the resurrection of the franchise in the following decade and beyond. Harlan will retire after 36 years with the club in May.
Favre discusses his subpar season
He says he hasn't lost confidence

"From a production standpoint, I think I've left some things out there, plays to be made, and I could always say that. But I also have proof in the past. You throw 30-plus touchdowns a year, you kind of get used to doing that. Then all of a sudden, you struggle to throw a touchdown pass and you start wondering, 'Is it me? Is it the system? Is it the guys around you?' " -- Brett Favre
Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre probably doesn't know he ranks 24th in the National Football League in passer rating or that he's as close to setting the all-time career passing touchdowns record (needs seven) as he is to setting the career interceptions record. He isn't oblivious, however, to his difficulties finding a groove this season or the fact he's not the same quarterback he was 10 years ago. What he - and probably the Packers, too - would like to know for sure is whether he's a victim of being thrust into a rebuilding situation or if his skills are diminishing. Two days before playing what could be his last home game in a career that has spanned 15 seasons in Green Bay, Favre made no announcement about his future. But he did address some of his poor play, the most recent of which came in the Packers' uninspired 17-9 victory over the Detroit Lions Sunday at Lambeau Field. In four of his last five games, Favre's passer rating has been below 60. Not coincidentally, the Packers have lost three of them. -- More
Favre savors present
By JASON WILDE / WSJ.COM
If Brett Favre is indeed about to play in the final two games of his NFL career, the Green Bay Packers' legendary quarterback does so with a crystal-clear understanding of the both the frivolity and frustration he has provided his fans for the last 15 years. "I hope I've given plenty of joy throughout my career," said Favre, who is equidistant from two NFL career records - seven TDs behind Dan Marino's touchdown pass record of 420, and seven interceptions behind George Blanda's interception record of 277. "And I've given plenty of heartache, too. It makes me feel good to hear people, as I do all the time, (say), 'You brought a lot of joy into our house and it's been fun watching you.' It's been fun doing it. I have to admit, I like turning on the film and watching some of the things I do myself. I also want to turn it off sometimes, too. But maybe that's why you pay for the tickets and watch. Because you never know." So while Favre acknowledged Thursday night's game against the Minnesota Vikings "very well could be" his last at Lambeau Field, he said he won't treat it any differently than the other 255 consecutive starts (including playoffs) he's made since taking over as the Packers' quarterback in 1992. He took that approach at the end of last year, too, but Favre admitted Tuesday he thought he was done after the Packers' season-ending victory over Seattle at Lambeau Field. His opinion changed as the offseason wore on, though, eventually leading to his April decision to return. He expects a similar internal tug-of-war after the New Year's Eve finale in Chicago, although he realizes the Packers need an answer sooner this time around. "I'm sure they wanted the decision quicker last year. I think that's the appropriate thing to do, to give them a decision as soon as possible," Favre said. "(But) to be honest with you, I don't think I'll ever be totally content with (retiring). I mean, I love this game. I really do. But there's factors that go into it, and I have to sort through that quickly, in fairness to my family, myself and to this team." -- More
Meet Dana
Houston Texans
Cheerleader
As a new member of the 2006 Houston Texans Cheerleading Squad, Dana is extremely excited to be dancing for football and anticipates the first game. Besides dancing in the 2004 Superbowl Pre-game show hosted in Houston, Texas, this will be her second debut on a football field. Dana graduated from a high school in East Texas where six man football does not exist. After high school she enjoyed dancing and choreographing for the Angelina College pom squad. But once again she found herself at a school with no football team. After two years she transferred to Sam Houston State University, a school with a football team, however, she found no time for a dance team. At this point in her life, she was a dance studio owner, had a two hour commute to and from school each day and was working towards a degree in dance. In May of 2004 she received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree in Dance.
After owning a dance studio in Crockett for five years and gaining her dance degree Dana felt it was time to try and go Pro. This is the hardest obstacle she has ever been faced with, leaving her family behind and closing down Dana's Dancers. But she knew it was now or never. She owed it to herself and wants her students to know that she is also doing this to be a role-model and hopes that they will emulate her someday.
Dana went on to dance and choreograph for the NBA. She continues to work as a competition choreographer and dance instructor. She often thought about achieving her lifelong dream of dancing for a football team, so she thought she'd give it a shot. After five rounds of different dance styles and two long, hard weeks of competing against over 800 of the most beautiful and talented women in Houston her dream came true.
Dana says that she can not wait to begin this football journey and that she has literally waited a lifetime for this opportunity. She loves her teammates, making appearances around Houston and especially the choreography and current hits the women dance too. We do not just have one style and I love that! Outside of practice she LOVES going to church, spending time with her husband, family from back home, friends and of course, taking dance classes. She just can't seem to get enough of dance.
A frequently asked fan question is how much dance experience does one have to attain? Dana would like to encourage more women with less experience to come out to auditions. She, herself, began cheerleading at the age of twelve and started studio dance at the age of 15. She believes it's all about work ethic."If you do begin to dance late in life, you must spend many hours each day practicing. You must have a passion for dance and believe that the time you invest into your passion will pay off." Dana's passion for dance was so strong that she opened a successful dance studio at the age of nineteen, earned her degree in dance and is now a 2006 Houston Texans Cheerleader. The blood, sweat, tears and prayers finally paid off and for that she thanks God daily!
